Thorsten Mempel, MD, PhD

Dr. Mempel is the Associate Director of the Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He obtained his MD and PhD in Physiology and trained in pediatric surgery at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, before engaging in Immunology research as a postdoctoral fellow at HMS in 2002 and as faculty at MGH since 2007. Dr. Mempel is a pioneer in the field of immuno-imaging and uses multiphoton intravital microscopy to study immune cell migration in vivo in lymphoid and non-lymphoid tissues. His work aims to elucidate how the communication between different types of immune cells is facilitated by their trafficking between and dynamic positioning within tissues, enabling them to act in a coordinated fashion to maintain immunological tolerance or mount effective immune responses, e.g. against cancer. His focus is on effector and regulatory T-cell responses against solid tumors with the aim to understand cancer immunobiology and guide the development of novel cancer immunotherapies.
