Craig Hersh, MD

Dr. Craig Hersh is a physician-scientist in the Channing Division of Network Medicine and the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He completed medical school and internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania and fellowships in pulmonary and critical care medicine and respiratory epidemiology at Harvard and BWH. He directs the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) clinic and the Alpha-1 Foundation Clinical Resource Center in the BWH Lung Center. His research integrates the tools of epidemiology, biomarkers, and omics to improve precision in the diagnosis and treatment of COPD and clinically relevant disease subtypes. He is a co-investigator in the NIH-sponsored multi-center COPDGene Study and has been the Principal Investigator or co-investigator on multiple COPD genetic epidemiology, gene expression, and biomarker studies supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Alpha-1 Foundation, and industry partners. His research has also extended into other chronic lung diseases, including asthma and pulmonary fibrosis. He is a fellow of the American Thoracic Society and a past chair of the society’s Section on Genetics and Genomics.
